DORPER STUD

DORPER STUD
DORPER STUD Stud No. D164

The Dorper stud flock was formed with the purchase of the nucleus of a registered Dorper flock from Whynot Dorpers in 2010. The bloodlines are predominantly Amarula and Kaya.

In early 2013, on the advice of internationally renowned inspector and judge GT Ferreira, we purchased 25 full-blood ewes with strong Amarula and Kaya bloodlines to further enhance the genetics of the stud flock.

All lambs are vaccinated with Gudair (for Johne’s Disease) and 6-in-1 vaccine. We conduct regular monitoring (worm tests) for internal parasites, and carry out targeted drenching based on test results. There are strict farm biosecurity practices in place to protect the property from the entry and spread of pests and diseases, and a sheep health certificate is provided with all sheep sold.

Good shedding ability has been a challenge in the cool Southern Tablelands environment but with genetic selection for improved shedding, the ewe flock currently comprises around 70% full shedders. We believe that it is actually advantageous for the ewes to maintain a covering along the backline for summer sun protection and winter warmth in the Southern Tablelands.

We are committed to producing superior genetics for tablelands prime lamb production and therefore, we are working closely with international inspectors and judges to ensure we continue to produce high-quality sheep.

All our Dorper rams (sires) live together with their White Dorper and cross-bred 'cousins' year-round except for the joining period of five weeks when they are used selectively across the ewes to achieve the highest improvement and genetic gain in the progeny. They also share their paddock, and are often found grazing together with our two Miniature Galloways. Our rams are used to being moved by people, by horse and by ATV. We also run them through our sheep yards regularly to ensure they remain quiet and calm when being handled.

Our Dorper ewes (dams) have excellent temperament and shedding ability, high fertility and are assessed by qualified inspectors according to the international Dorper Breed Standards of Excellence. They have the requisite hardiness to perform well in the harsher conditions of the Southern Tablelands.

Please call or email us if you are interested in buying quality full-blood Dorpers. We cater for studs, commercial enterprises and small farms alike, and are committed to working with you to meet your needs and help you improve the quality of your sheep.
