MOTTLEY DORPERS

MOTTLEY DORPERS

‘Mottley Dorpers’ is an exciting initiative from the Eastern Dorpers and White Dorpers Stud. As well as supplying both stud quality Dorpers and White Dorpers, our boutique no-shear crossbred Dorpers are available under the ‘Mottley Dorpers’ initiative.

Mottley Dorpers are beautifully coloured – some have a rich, deep brown colour, while others are primarily white with patches of brown or black all over their bodies. You can even select the colour pattern of your choice (subject to availability).

Being crossbreds, Mottley Dorpers exhibit ‘hybrid vigour’ to give them the best traits from the original breeds they are derived from. Our Mottley Dorpers are crosses from full-blood Dorpers and full-blood Wiltshire Horns, and full-blood Dorpers and full-blood Damaras.

A few years ago, we recognised that many people are keen to have the carcase quality, easy care management and higher profits of the excellent Dorper or White Dorper sheep, but they do not want to go through the extended breeding process that is required to move from wool sheep to no-shear sheep. Therefore, we developed a separate commercial flock of Mottley Dorpers as an easy and economical way to assist you to develop your no-shear flock very quickly.

The sheep are selected as lambs for their kind temperament primarily, followed by shedding ability and conformation. They are well-adapted to life in the Southern Tablelands and are suitable as pets and lawn mowers, and also for establishing your first breeding enterprise. Their meat is low fat.

All lambs are vaccinated with Gudair (for Johne’s Disease) and 6-in-1 vaccine. We conduct regular monitoring (worm tests) for internal parasites, and carry out targeted drenching based on test results. There are strict farm biosecurity practices in place to protect the property from the entry and spread of pests and diseases, and a sheep health certificate is provided with all sheep sold.

We are committed to providing quality Mottley Dorpers at a sensible price. To this end, we make sure that some of the lambs from the Dorper and White Dorper stud flocks, who do not make the high standards for ‘stud quality’ but are none-the-less excellent commercial type sheep, are recruited into this flock each year to ensure a robust gene pool.

Please call or email us if you are interested in buying some Mottley Dorpers. We are committed to working with you to meet your needs and help you improve the quality of your sheep.
